What Is Fastest Mobile Browser?

What is technically the reason that I can't watch some videos (see details) on mobile Safari on smaller iOS devices and yet I can on an alternate browser set to emulate an iPad?

  • This happens all the time, but here is one example. From Google, I find a video and select it from inside mobile Safari, only to get an error message saying that it can't be played on my device. This is an example of such a page that leads to that message: http://m.comedycentral.com/colbertnation_video.rbml?id=shout-out-to-arby-s&weburl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.colbertnation.com%2Fthe-colbert-report-videos%2F370180%2Fjanuary-06-2011%2Fshout-out-to-arby-s%2F&xrs=share_copy&cid=300 So, I then open the same page, using the same device, in the Atomic Browser app, but with settings in the app set to identify the browser as originating from Safari on an iPad and the video then plays perfectly fine. Why wouldn't mobile Safari be configured to play every video that it possibly could? What is the actual technical delimiter between successful playback and failure? It's obviously not Adobe Flash.

  • Answer:

I wouldn't rule out Flash, it's required for the desktop version of YouTube for playing videos. But you may have real proof it isn't, I'm not sure. It could easily be a WMV file, which is a Microsoft format. There are plenty of others like that as well.
