You can keep these points in mind: 1 Communicate effectively . Read the project description carefully and thoroughly. Give importance to the requirements and post a reply( or Bid/Quote) only if you are 100% sure that you can do this work comfortably.   2 No Standard replies . Don't post standard template based replies. Your Reply should be specific to the given project. 3. Create a Professional portfolio document (if you are not allowed to share your contact details otherwise create a website and provide the link) and provide it to the client, only if they ask for it. 4. Your reply should contain the reasons, why client should choose you, So, write your strong points first. Be truthful and honest. 5. If you are new to freelancing, try to get small project first to get initial positive reviews and ratings. 6. Try to work on some personal project or some open source project, mention this in your Portfolio. 7. Be an expert in your work domain. Instead of working on 100 Technologies, better develop expertise for some specific technology and work in that.            Best of Luck!

First, browse through the projects being posted on the freelance sites and try to analyse the kind of projects - what domain it falls under, does it need any special skills, why do some projects receive less proposals and some receive more proposals and see where you can fill the gap.  Like Anonymous has said, become an expert at something, that is the easiest way to get more projects - No one likes to pay for you to learn. If you are new and have no experience, try to do some projects yourself and host it, show the designs that you have, or the kind of applications that you can build. For example: If you can build a e-commerce website, do it rather than wait for someone accept your proposal. It is not going to go waste anyway, you can re-use the code for other projects. This will increase your portfolio and your build time when you get the project. You can also work with other experienced teams/individuals on revenue sharing basis initially to increase your portfolio and then move towards independently bidding on projects later. Some of the things to keep in mind - * Give unbeatable customer service - Don't wait for customer to ask you for update, be proactive and tell a customer about the status of the project, Offer them free support for 'n' months(to fix any bugs or add features, etc.), take voluntary pay cut if you are delivering your project late - these are some trade-offs you need to be okay with to build reputation and these things will be liked by your clients. It has worked for me, you need to see what you can do and cannot. * Give genuine bids - when you bid, be proactive and give a breakdown of the tasks and estimated cost/time to complete each task. The clients should understand that you have read the project description and you are the (wo)man for the project. * Understand that you not only need to build a project, but also build relationship with your clients and win over them so that you can get projects from them in the future. So, your focus should be to build a strong bonding with them  and this can be accomplished through building quality products and customer service.
