What are the prospects of private medical practice in new Zealand for a specialist and how much do they earn in average?
-
I m planning to move to new Zealand after my postgraduation in India. I heard salaries are quite low as compared to other countries to the doctors. In what extent it is true. Is the cost of living qnd salaries match to live comfortable life? And how about starting a private practice, is it really hard?? And what about earnings in private practice??

Answer:
In New Zealand we have a publicly run healthcare system. The majority of cases are dealt with by this system. The cost for visiting a hospital is - almost nothing. Many people live their entire lives without having insurance. Private hospitals exist. But they focus on treating the well off those who can pay or have insurance - although the government does contract to them as well. Generally specialists work for the state and also take private patients on the side. If you need to see one, you need a referral from the GP and then you wait, but this does not apply if you have insurance or lots of money. If a person has an accident they are automatically covered by accident insurance called ACC. This insurance will pay out what I believe to be a fixed fee. One benefit of ACC is that if you are a registered medical practitioner you have no liability for medical malpractice - although doctors still have this insurance as there are still a few cases where they may be liable. I heard a few years ago that the commerce commission rapped some doctors over the knuckles because they were obstructing the registration of a new doctor somewhere in the south Island (eyes I think). That said make sure, make really sure that you will get work here. There are a few doctors here who drive taxis because they can not get registered. Finally this story was on the news recently. Doctors who could not get registered. http://www.3news.co.nz/Highly-skilled-migrants-turned-away-from-Kiwi-jobs/tabid/817/articleID/344379/Default.aspx Please note: I don't work in the medical sector, I just read a lot.

India has a doctor patient ratio of 0.7/1000. This is below the WHO recommendation of 1/1000. In the rural areas in India, this ratio is likely to be much lower. I personally feel you are needed more in your own country than in NewZealand. After your postgraduate training in India, you owe a debt of gratitude and a debt of duty to the country that has nurtured you this far. Contributing to the current brain drain will not benefit your country or your people.
