Can I use a PAL version camera?

"The Hobbit 2 : The Desolation of Smaug (2013)" What camera, other than RED EPIC, did Peter Jackson use to shoot the "Barrel Escape" scene?

  • In "The Hobbit 2: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)", during the "Barrel Escape" scene where the dwarves escaped from Thranduil's Hall and being chased by Orcs army, there were three shots showing water splashing toward the camera (each was less than or about one second in length). When seeing the movie in IMAX 3D (24fps) and HFR 3D (48fps), a very perceptible compression artifact makes three of these water-splashing-towards-camera shots appeared to be very different from the other shots in the "Barrel Escape" sequence, or so to say, these 3 shots are not the same as the overall image quality (and "feeling") of a RED EPIC camera footage. To my impression, they look more likely to be captured using a GoPro or DSLR (such as Canon 5D, even it's video resolution is too low for such a movie) camera. This is based on my viewing experience of the IMAX 3D (24fps) version of the movie, as well as paying extra attention to the sequence mentioned above when watching the HFR 3D (48fps) version. (However the movie is not released in blu-ray yet, so I'll wait for the blu-ray and find the exact time of these shots.) So my question is: did Peter Jackson used any camera other than RED EPIC in making The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug? If he did, what type of camera it is, and is there any particular reason to use it?

  • Answer:

Yes, those shots were captured using GoPros. Check this out : @http://whitenoise.gizmodo.com/did-the-hobbit-2-use-a-consumer-camera-on-a-scene-a-g-1487872173
