System Administration: How does one become a self-taught Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA)?

  • There's a clear path for becoming a Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) and/or a Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE). It's basically like, if you think you are already great with linux, you purchase this book -- http://www.amazon.com/dp/0071765654/ -- and if you are confident about it once you complete the book, you take the exams and pass 'em in flying colors. But the path to Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA) isn't as straightforward. Apart from being a Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), you need to pass the following exams as well: Red Hat Certificate of Expertise in Deployment and Systems Management Red Hat Certificate of Expertise in Directory Services and Authentication or Red Hat Certified Virtualization Administrator Red Hat Certificate of Expertise in Clustering and Storage Management Red Hat Certificate of Expertise in Security: Network Services or Red Hat Certificate of Expertise in Server Hardening Red Hat Certificate of Expertise in Performance Tuning But I am not sure where I can get the necessary course material for the aforementioned exams, especially 'cause the fees that Red Hat charges for its training courses is ridiculously high, and moreover I want to be a self-taught system/network architect, studying at my own pace. So the question is, as apparent as it should be by now, where I can get the necessary course materials for the aforementioned exams that I have to take (after RHCE) to become a RHCA?

    Disclaimer: I'm RHCE, RHCVA and contract for Red Hat. I self-studied for the RHCVA using online docs only. Everything you need to know is available at Red Hat's documentation directory on their website. Just read and learn tons of stuff and experiment with configuration and use cases. If you have the time I will recommend browsing through Bugzilla as well.

You can! I have earned http://www.redhat.com/certification/rhcss/ by self-training. Self training is best one if you go through it. Read the Documentations/bugzillas/Training material but when it comes to practice, if you are studying by Self-training, you should have Labs as well. Practising on Labs will be more important than that of just reading and for few courses like RH401, you need to en roll yourself to the authorised training partner because you won't get the actual product and generating its certificate i.e. https://access.redhat.com/site/tools/satcert won't be possible to use that product anyhow. Here in Red Hat, we have Labs to prepare ourselves, so it makes things simpler to get hands on.

RHCSA is a beginner level and RHSE an advanced level exam, the tests aren’t multiple choice questions (MCQ) based, rather focus on testing your performance in a live environment. While RHCA certification incorporates the skills and knowledge of RHCDS plus advanced networking services security, system monitoring, and performance tuning.I'm a RHCA specialist and have passed this exam 5 months ago. I'm RHCA. The text book is very good for self learning, as well as the online documents on red hat website. But, most parts of the RHCA skills are really for enterprise using, if you don't have enough experience of deploying or administrating a lot red hat servers, it will be confuse sometimes. I suggest you work as a linux administrator first, than consider if you really need the certificate in the furture career.
