What is the scope of mechanical engineering innovations in India and specially the consumer driven ones?
-
I find the field quite less in activity. I am a third year mech student pretty much interested in technology yet I find that their isn't any innovation or startup culture in this field compared to computer science or other fields. Consumer driven innovations seems to be far behind. Why are we missing out? Is it just because mechanical takes much more knowledge and experience before you can actually produce something.

Answer:
I can give you one line; I don't know much else: To set up a Mech.Engg. company, you need a factory. That is lots of machines, lots of workers, lots of land, and lots of raw material. THAT IS LOTS OF MONEY. To start a computer company, you need about 10 computers and some software. Innovations: There are so many innovations happening on a daily basis: more and more automation, and more and more labour reduction, more efficient heat removal, etc. Quite a few companies find something unique, implement it in their place alone, and keep silent. This is because of the competition: they are addressing the OEMs and not the direct consumer, so we don't hear about it.

Dear Student, Lets try to put a context to it. Do you innovate, and work on new ideas? Are you a part of a team which do? Do you want to be? Do you want to ultimately run a business that will do this? (probably a bit too early for this) There is innovation in mechanical engineering like every other field, its not part of mainstream business because the life cycle of bringing such change to mainstream obviously takes longer. Depending on what your answer to the above question is, there are career paths for you. There are lots of research projects which happen in good research institutes in India RRI, Bangalore may be a good place for you. Or IIT Bombay and IIT Roorkee, perhaps. There are centers internationally which do things even better, depending on your level of interest. Its great that you are interested in Innovation. Don't let the perceived lack of hype about it affect you in anyway. IT is helping new businesses surface, there is a business model which makes young guys start companies, take risks and potentially win. Thats not the case in Mechanical Engineering, but that doesn't mean there is little innovation there. http://sangram.me/ http://able-partners.in/
