What kind of jobs is in design?

I am a mechanical engineering graduate from India fresh out of college. What kind of jobs should I look for that would provide me with the best learning curve in design or R&D?

  • P.S.: I have considerable skills in a few design softwares but my academics are not at all flattering.

  • Answer:

Most important thing to remember: Your authority as a design engineer or R&D engineer is not assessed on purely your knowledge of mechanical design or CAD/CAE software alone, but your ability to think creatively and solve problems. Get into a company which gives you an all-round experience, in teams touching the customer of their products, all the way to the supplier of parts for products. Design and development is a concurrent, multiobjective, massively parallel process. It requires non-linear thinking, skills in different areas, a knowledge about organizations, and most importantly, strong fundamentals in mechanical engineering concepts. Get into a job which allows you to put on these different hats, all over a period of 2 years. This will help you develop a mature point of view about any job offers you may get later, and will also help you understand your true strengths and weaknesses. Some things to remember: Learn, learn, learn. Be curious and explore and learn lots of different things about different types of products. Understand and learn about quality. Learn the basics, like the 7 QC tools Understand multidisciplinary and multiobjective design approaches. MDO and MSDO changed my worldview about engineering design Software aren't the be-all and end-all of mechanical design although sadly jobs in many companies in India make it seem that way... but CAD/CAE packages help put your ideas into action. Learn them well, but know how to automate and do things faster. (Be lazy enough to learn to automate). Learn, understand and become comfortable with doing design calculations purely by hand, with pencil and paper, for simple designs. This is a lesson I learnt the hard way. A higher degree doesn't mean more knowledge or more effectiveness. Look closely at the job you're in and what you'll get out of it. Hope this helps!

has covered most of the things you ought to do. Here are few other things you may want to consider: 1. Do not choose your job based on how famous the organization is. Growth in a big MNC is almost always slow. 2. Do not choose your job based on the salary package. Your bank balance is not the ultimate parameter to measure job satisfaction. 3. Let your first job not be sitting in front of the computer so far away from the product. Start in a manufacturing plant. It will give you a better idea of the products you might design in the future. Frankly, I would ask you not to restrict yourself to design or R&D. After completing my undergraduate course, I hardly knew my interests. There are lot of avenues in mechanical engineering and you can't go wrong in any of these. If you get an opportunity to be an engineering trainee in any company, I am sure you will be in rotation and you will get to see different kinds of jobs in the mechanical sphere. So, keep your options open. Best of luck!

Job search is really a long and daunting process. People join companies which they are hearing about and then realize that the work doesn't suit them. To be good at something you should first like the work you are doing. Hence you first need to recognize your strengths and areas of interests and have a strategic way of searching. You can use assessment tools for that (http://www.skillwill.co.in/). It assesses you on the basis of your skills and knowledge and then recommends jobs best suiting your talents and personality. You might be unaware of your true talents.
