How can I be better at my new job?

How do I find someone who can give me a better job in other countries when I am really good at what I do?

  • TL;DR - How do I find someone who can offer me a better job in any first world country like US, UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, or also maybe like Dubai, Singapore or how do I find someone who can offer me a telecommute job? If I am really good at Web Development and Marketing. I am a Web Developer based in India going through a screwed up phase of my life (okay not that bad but still its ugly). Basically money is the root of evil as we know. I need a better paying job to pay my bills. 75% of my monthly salary goes into the mortgage payment for my apartment. I need at least a 20% hike to live happily. My current job is crap. It’s almost like a copy paste job, nowhere related to my skill set although I was promised technical work before moving into this team. There is huge amount of work but everything is non-technical. So basically I have to work long hours and but this will never help me with my career growth. My manager doesn't have a career plan for me. He doesn't set goals for me. He has no idea how to get me promoted at least until 2015. Al my 1:1 meetings are static with me whining for better work and my manager asking me to “create work” and do it. I mean he wants me to come up with ideas, estimate them, take out time from my copy paste schedule and work on them. I tried everything that is required to get a promotion (yes, we have some specific guidelines for that). I worked 12 hours a day for a month (no, that’s not a part of guidelines) working on making significant positive improvements in the current systems, saved over 40 business days so far by coding automation for tasks that were done manually earlier, filed a patent for an idea that might help my company make potentially Billions from this year onward. I also have an idea related to an industry which based on my research no one has ventured in yet. I don't feel like sharing that with my current company for the above reasons. My company doesn't honor my loyalty and hard work (or maybe just my current manager). I declined an offer last year from a company that offered me a 40% hike last year thinking I would get a promotion with 20-25% hike in this company (worst decision of my life). In return I got a 6% hike (okay 6.9%) from my company this April. I believe that other company now blacklisted my candidature because I didn't honor their offer and the HR’s do not respond to my emails any more. There are hardly 3-4 companies as good as my current company in my city so moving in within the city might be very difficult. I get offers from many random companies that might pay a bit more but they aren't good for my resume. There are a lot of reasons for which I don't wish to relocate to another city. I would rather want to move to another country. I understand its not easy to move to USA and I will have to wait until January 2015, and then also find a sponsor to file an H1 visa. I am not sure how work permit works in UK and I think people in UK are hesitant in sponsoring work permit. So, how do I find someone who can offer me a better job in any other country maybe US, UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, Dubai. Or how do I find someone who can offer me a telecommute job? Oh before you say freelance, I freelance like a lot (over 5 years by now) on Elance, Freelancer and oDesk. People there come to get a website for $100 or to hire a web developer who can work for $5 an hour. So I don't think freelance is a great option.

  • Answer:

Get involved in open source. Most companies build their infrastructure and products using FOSS components and these companies need people who know how to extend and improve these components according to their needs. FOSS development is inherently distributed and remote and many companies have learned that the best talent may (and probably will) not be local. A company can find a lot of Python developers in a specific city but I'm not sure how easy would be to find lets say contributors to the Django web framework. Also there are social skills that one has to learn when working on a FOSS environment and this is something that companies can't teach you (in fact is the other way around). So even though there are many ways to find a remote work I think that getting involved in a FOSS project is by far the better and most interesting one.

Other answers

This is just a quick answer, as someone with more knowledge than me can most likely provide you with a more in-depth answer in the near future. Browse United States job listings related to your field of work. Several sites such as Behance (http://www.behance.net/joblist) and AngelList (https://angel.co/jobs) have job queries that would be related to your fields. Search there initially. Finally, don't just stop at sending in resumes, connect with the people you're talking to and use them as future contacts. Ask them to connect you to other companies and founders who might have use for someone with your skill set, keep the web of connections moving outward. Connect, connect, connect and surely you will find what you're looking for. Oh, and remember: connect.
