Answer:
Matt Cutts recently said that 301 redirects now pass the same amount of PageRank that a direct link does:

There are a lot of pieces to this, but the direct answer to your question before I get into the nuances is that "301 redirects can be good for SEO when used properly and historically are preferred over 302 redirects." Best practice is if you move a page, you should implement a 301 redirect for both the search engines and users. This is because for SEO you want to save links and point them to the new page. For users, it's a bad experience to hit a 404 page. Now, there are many caveats and nuances to this. If a site has a link-based *algorithmic* "penalty" (that is in quotes because it's not officially a penalty) and you try to 301 redirect it to another site, the penalty will likely pass through those redirects. On the notion of multiple redirects, this is especially one to watch for on really big websites. I still see a lot of issues with non-www/www/trailing slash/non trailing slash redirects where there are chains. I also found on a site of 10s of millions of pages where basically every original url had 3 to 4 redirects before reaching the new url. This was causing multiple issues: It was eating up crawl budget because there were extra status codes for the search engines to hit before they found a 200. Because of the redirect chains, the search engines were not dropping the old URLs out of the index and the new ones, which were changed for SEO as well as users, were not having the effect they should. Also because of #2, users had a much longer load time on the site and the site's conversion rates suffered. Finally, on the topic of 301s vs 302s, historically as I said earlier best practice is 301s. I still recommend a 301 over a 302 when it is a permanent redirect, but many of us are now seeing that 302s are passing link equity almost as well as 301s. So there you have it! There's two things to look at. First, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Filv4pP-1nw, a 301 redirect is treated exactly like a link by Google, at least when it comes to PageRank. But on the other hand, John Mueller confirmed via Google Hangout that organic search penalties can pass through a 301 redirected site. Johnâs confirmation confirms that this being a realistic factor is likely. The notion of this actually occurring in the wild is probably far less, unless youâre doing something like buying used domain names in attempt to reclaim their inbound link value or trying to circumvent a manual action. The problem is the following. Every link leaks a bit of google juice. If there are 4 or 5 redirects one after the other, i can confirm it is not going to be good for SEO. For instance, Source page => 1 redirect => 2 redirect => 3 redirect => 4th redirect => target page !

Not at allThe reason 301 redirect is so powerful is its pass all the link juice of a domain name to another website. so if i spent long time building links to my domain name and this domain got high authority and high page rank you can easily using 301 redirect to pass all of that link juice to your site without much work. and without worrying about getting banned from google.how to benefit from 301 redirect :its really simple to benefit from this, all what you have to do is find a domain with high authority and a good link profile and redirect it to your own money site, simple enough ?but the main challenge is to find this domain and analyze it correctly to make sure you only get the highest quality possible

No, if done properly. We have redirected all our landing pages 2 years ago. Make sure that you do redirection to relevant new pages. Example: /hosting to /web-hosting Not: /hosting to /audio-streaming

It depends like Ronnie Charrier said. I use 301's as part of my ranking strategy often and they're great if you want a good diversified ranking strategy, but again, it depends on how you use them. Corey, Local Fame Media

I think the answer to this question depends upon intent. If a user has simply moved a page, or changed site structure , then no, it's not going to have a "bad" effect on SEO.However in saying that, I've seen testing performed that shows a loss in performance when purposely trying to "funnel" link equity. For eg, 301 redirecting pages with link equity across to other pages in an effort to boost those pages within the SERPS. When done, the opposite occurred (loss)In addition, of course if you're 301' toxic links or a penalised domain, the same is likely - a loss in performance, as the flow on effect is likely. For most however the answer will be, no.

Generally, 301 redirects have a PR loss of anywhere between 1% and 10%. Say if page A is 301 redirected to page B, and if page A has X link juice, page B will have (90%-99%)X link juice.

Hi guys, I have a website of PR3 which is now redirected to a new domain. I was wondering if I should stop SEO for my PR3 site and start building it for the new domain or for both the domains or just for the PR3 old domain because it is still ranking good in results. Thanks
