Answer:
Dear sir, Thanks for A2A. I don't know much about Phd but I think it need much patience and research oriented approach. As you said you didn't find steel firm interesting after joining, are you sure about material science? Go for phd only if you have tremendous interest in topic you want to do phd in. As I have no experience in material science or metallurgy field i can't say about which one will better m.tech or MS. I asked your query to one of my friend who is applying for phd his advice is to go for MS.

Future: On doing your MS your could take up a job (Decent paying by US standards, although it is difficult to find one) or you could go for a PhD. Post-PhD you could go for a Job, a Postdoc or enroll as a faculty in university. It is difficult to get 100% scholarship despite stipends and assistant-ships if you were to go for MS from a foreign university. You would have to pay from your own pockets or earn the rest while doing small jobs along with your MS. A PhD abroad is usually 100% funded due to a tuition waiver and a stipend. However, this might be cancelled if your performance in the PhD becomes unsatisfactory. Though a PhD is less of a burden financially, it is an enormously long course (4-6 years). Unlike an MS where you get your degree after passing two years, pursuing a PhD will give you no guarantee that you'll successfully complete it. There are a considerable number of PhD candidates who drop out of their course even after 2-3 years of research. Thus, one should go for a PhD only if you have a strong aptitude for research (They say that a PhD is a test of perseverance and character rather than of intelligence). Doing an M.Tech. from India is probably not advisable if you want to pursue a PhD abroad up ahead as a MS guy (abroad) will have an edge over you. If you're confused, you should apply for a MS abroad. This should help you decide if the PhD is a right choice for you or a better-paying job. You just need to assess if you could bear the financial costs for this route.

If you can get into a direct PhD , always prefer it over an MS. I thought that I might get some clarity about the topic of research for PhD after the Masters but still in the same amount of confusion. I am from a Chemistry/Materials background. So my answer may be specific to it. Atleast in Europe, it is very hard to find a job with a masters degree. People tend to complete/expect PhD for work by default especially if you are into R&D. Even if you find work after a masters, your growth is saturated at some point for lack of a PhD degree.
