Corporate Social Responsibility: How can an organization acquire land for new projects when faced with the challenge of increased community activism?

  • Community Activism is a major cause for delays in land acquisition which lead to  uncertainties in project schedules making the project vulnerable to cost and  time over runs. While Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities  commencing along with the land acquisition has been partly successful in the  past, the community activism today is often negating even the benefits of CSR.  Hence innovative ideas are sought to address the following: a) How should  a company assess the expected level of community activism when scouting for land  to set up the project? b) How should a company assess its effectiveness in  terms of its strength in deploying mitigation measure and the resources  available to execute them? c) If the level for community activism is expected  to be high, then would it be preferable to locate the project at a different  site even though at a higher cost.

I am not sure what a company can do. But there are two things that the Indian Government can do make sure there is enough land available for industrial projects that would help Indian economy : - 1. Investing in R&D to boost India's agricultural productivity. 2. Invading or colonizing foreign lands India is one third the size of United States, but India's population is more than three times that of US. So clearly land is a scarce resource in India by design. Here is a visualization on how it is like in India compared to other countries. : http://flowingdata.com/2009/11/13/land-mass-and-population-by-country/ The sad part is - 60% of India's land (World average around 37%) is used for agriculture and yet we don't have enough grains to feed our people. Worldbank data link: http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/AG.LND.AGRI.ZS/countries/1W-IN?display=graph The agricultural productivity (cereal yield) in India is 2500 Kg per hectare. While the world average is 3500 Kg per hectare (5500 Kg per hectare in China and 7000 Kg per hectare in US). Worldbank data link: http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/AG.YLD.CREL.KG/countries/1W-IN-CN-US?display=graph So clearly India needs to free up agricultural land by getting more yield out of lesser land and the use the freed up land for other industrial projects.
