How do I boot ubuntu?

How do I get out of the grub rescue(ubuntu bootloader)? and reinstalll windows 8 boot loader.

  • Hi, I installed ubuntu 13.04, while installing this my windows boot-loader is replaced by grub boot-loader. Now,I have uninstalled the ubuntu, and removed the partition of ubuntu using windows 8 disk management. Now after starting my laptop again it directs to me a black colored window, prompting grub rescue> command window. applying 'ls' command gives following (hd0) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) and doing> "ls (hd0)" gives error: unknown filesystem I don't know how to get out of this problem? I want to my windows boot-loader back and want to completely remove Ubuntu boot-loader. While doing this I don't want to remove my files in local c drive. Earlier both ubuntu and windows were installed in same drive.

  • Answer:

Boot from your Windows 8 installation media. If you still end in grub, check the boot order in your BIOS. Beware USB media sometimes appear as a disk rather than removable media. If it boots, then after selecting language choose "Repair your computer" instead of "Install now", then "Troubleshoot" and "Advanced options", launch a command prompt window and enter these commands: bootrec.exe /fixmbr bootrec.exe /fixboot Now reboot and you should be OK.

Windows does not support the multiboot specification, and as such, cannot be loaded by GRUB.  In order for GRUB to load Windows, it needs to delegate the task to the Windows bootloader.  This technique is known as chainloading.  Assuming that the Windows bootloader is still present, it should be possible to chainload the Windows bootloader via the following command: chainloader (h0)+1 boot However, if Windows bootloader is no longer present, then you would need to use the Windows installation media and boot into "Repair Mode", which will allow you to (non-destructively) recover the bootloader.
