What are the google labs?

Google just announced that it is acquiring Nest Labs for $3.2 billion. What are the global and strategic implications of this deal and Nest's success? How is home automation changing the world?

    I believe that automobile and home automation present much larger market to disrupt with technology than wearables. Having said this, lets talk about home automation. Andy Rubin is leading effort on robotics which have some overlap in the area of home automation. Couple this with technology from Nest and you have a good combination to position Google to reach every household as the technology matures. The robotics effort can further help Google in automobiles where they are far ahead with driverless car project. So from your cellphone to glasses to watches to computers to TV to home automation to automobile to wifi hotspots, Google might be every where. The difference between them and competition is that they are trying to innovate on bit of everything and still doing well. My only regrets is that I am not able to link anti aging in this strategy... :-)

it's a great example of what happens when you're sitting on pots of cash.  You do not so smart things.   You realize of course at that price, Google would have to sell 32 million thermostats at $100 profit to just break-even?  Not gonna happen.   And anybody can build a "intelligent" thermostat, as long as you carefully avoid certain patents.   There are probably several Chinese knockoffs already in production, they can sell those thermostats for $50 each and make a good profit, deeply undercutting Google and Nest.
