Wow! This is exactly the question I had last year when I was preparing for CEED. It's a really tough question. I really had to struggle a lot with this myself. But I'll try to answer to the best of my abilities. I'm guessing you're gonna write CEED this year- So that'll be CEED 2014. It will take place in November end (mostly). The first thing you need to understand is that anybody with an open mind and decent drawing skills can get through CEED. You don't need to be extraordinary at drawing (obviously it does help if you are extremely good at it). Stuff about Question Paper format:Total 100 Marks. The paper has 2 Parts. Part A- Multiple choice. 50 Marks. It will test you on many things from General Aptitude, GK, Analytical ability. Famous architectures around the world- Bridges, buildings etc. In CEED-2013 I got a few questions on mechanical pulleys (physics)! So there will always be surprises. Part-B- Again divided into 2 sections. Drawing Ability and Design Problem Solving. Total 50 Marks. The 2 most time consuming things in the entire paper. Check out the previous question papers. I gave the link below. Also the paper format may change again every year. But you will be notified on the official CEED website if that's the case. Stuff you need to know before appearing for the exam: You need to start preparing right away. Read anything you can find on Interaction Design and Visual Communication. Go as deep as you can into the subject. Check out- Smashing Magazine- http://www.smashingmagazine.com/ http://www.uxbooth.com/articles/complete-beginners-guide-to-interaction-design/. Another great resource- http://teacupblog.blogspot.in/ Previous Question Papers- http://www.iitb.ac.in/~pge/ceed_qp/. Go through the previous question papers and try to answer as many of the questions as you can. Trust me you will learn a lot of things by answering them. Sadly I did that in the last few days. :( You need decent drawing skills. By the time you write the exam, you should be able to draw fruits, vegetables and everyday objects from your mind as far as possible in 3D perspective. Check out- http://www.dragoart.com/everyday-objects-c377-1.htm  http://www.idsketching.com/ Be creative while answering the questions. What I mean to say is try to use the answer sheet to your advantage and present your points clearly and accurately. Try to think of different ways you could use the answer sheet to present your answers. This is not really that important. But its one of those good-to-know things. Optional: Good sense of humor. :P Let me know if you need any more info or if I missed out on anything. Update 1: Similar to , even I have no formal exposure to designing. I have a B.E. degree in Mechanical Engg. Also I do have a lot of interest in painting, sketching, photography and Photoshop. So that helped me quite a bit. Update 2: NID has a separate entrance exam. But the way we prepare doesn't change for CEED or NID. I skipped NID exam. Update 3: I was shortlisted for the interview rounds at IDC and IISc. But couldn't make it after that. Tough luck. :( Update 4: D'Source | http://www.dsource.in/. This website is maintained by IDC and sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resources, Government of India. Update 5: Here's another essential blog everyone preparing for CEED should read- https://thepowerofdesign.quora.com/Design-Resources. Thanks to ! :)

Here are few tips:1.Sketch on paper as much as you can. More you sketch, more you will be able to learn more about drawing and it will make you better prepared for it.2.Diversify your scope. In 2010, paper had mostly graphical answers to the questions but in 2011, they had many MCQs and lesser answers which required you to draw. Also, subject wise, the questions may range from graphics to just plain concepts and innovative ideas, so read as much as you can about designing.3.Try downloading old test papers from IIT website. (I guess you can download upto last 5 years papers).http://4.%C3%82%C2%A0As of today, there are still 8-9 months to go so till then, you can start preparing your portfolio.5.Try learning about the innovations in design and as you said you are interested in UX/UI, better learn about mobile platforms. Your programming knowledge can help you a lot as well though you still need to be good at sketching.P.S.: I appeared for CEED2010 and got a rank (under 100 AIR).Though, I didn't appear for studio test because of some other constraints. I didn't have any formal design education like graduation in Designing but same Engineering in CS like you though I had some working experience of graphic designing. I DIDN’t STUDY AT IDC EVENTUALLY.

How to prepare for getting into M.Des through CEED ? 1. See the previous years papers You need to set up a strategy of what you  will face. Good if you have a friend in IDC or NID, who can help you  with some old papers. 2. Sketching saves, and is fun too Good if you can sketch cartoons. CEED  requires you to sketch some everyday objects. This should include  representing objects as they are, with their material and texture. You  need not be too great still life artist, but you should be able to  convey through your sketches well. 3. Learn Freehand sketching Most of the time using instruments is not  allowed in CEED. It will help you to learn basics of freehand  sketching. The best way is to sit with pencil and paper and try to  sketch. 4. Practice with the right equipments Fortunately for CEED, all you need is  pencil and brains. So what pencil do you use? Always try to use 2 grades  of pencil: H-grade for rough work, light drawings, etc and B for rapid  work and where shading is involved. A wooden pencil works best, but  sometimes a 0.7 mm pencil is best kept in reserve. Also, pack a non-dust  eraser. 5. Improve Visualization skills What you see is what you draw. Sometimes,  you have to “see” in your mind. This is visualization. So, first try to  get best picture of what you want to sketch in your mind, then think  about it, and then put your pencil to the paper. 6. Enhance Creativity It might be helpful to think laterally.  For example, list 10 uses of a coin other than currency. And do this  within a minute. I hope you get the point. 7. Read daily comic strip This might sound silly, but comic strips  actually are an example of a storyboard. Sometimes questions are asked  to represent a storyline, say, how will you make a cup of tea. This will  need your sketching skills as well as story-telling ability. So don’t  just laugh at jokes in comic strips but see how they have told it, and  why they have draw things in the way they appear. CEED prep with 40 odd days left !! Day 1 – day 10    : object sketching only. About 50 objects of everyday use a day on A1 size newsprint paper Day 11 – day 20 : practice of rapid human figures Day 21 – day 30 : Practice previous year papers objective type questions as this part shouldnt let you down !! (Its pretty simple) Day 31 – last day : studied previous year papers. Solved them over again and again

This might appear contradictory to most answers you hear about preparing for CEED, but I think the best way to prepare is by not taking any advice. The goal of the test is to identify original thinkers. Of course you can take some training when it comes to improving your abilities to sketch, or assimilate some design knowledge, but will not guarantee your success. In the end, you should put more effort in forgetting all the cool TED talks, generic mechanisms of creative thinking, heavy terms on designing etc. and be real. Think for yourself and don't be scared to show what YOU feel it should be. If you're a programmer, so be it. You are a fine arts guy, so be it. There is no advantage of one background over the other in getting through CEED. Again be original, experiment a lot, make cool to show in your portfolio and don't be afraid to talk from your heart. Read books, but don't try to repeat the author or the principles they propose in your responses. This is less about knowledge and more about experience. Meaning- don't feel too secure if you have read a lot. Or insecure if you didn't. Do it. That's where the answers come from. Good luck!

The most important thing while preparing for not only CEED exam but other exams is to understand what is the paper pattern, what things they want as an answer and how we can creatives answer each question. Talking about Design, the most important thing is creativity and relevancy. These 2 things are important for CEED exam too. CEED exam is divided in 2 part 1. So, You can take following steps to succeed at CEED exam. 1. Improve your creative ability to solve design problem 2. Observe previous papers and try to solve them creatively If you want to start from the basics, there are some if the institutes which are good at coaching are follows 1. Arkin 2. BRDS 3.
