I am 24 years old and just starting college. Is it too late for me and what do can one do with a business degree?

I am turning 24 yrs old next month. After high school I just worked I never thought I could make it to college so I never tried. After having horrible dead end jobs. I decided to go back to school last semester. I love business theory and cant think of anything else I would like to major in except business management or marketing. For a long time I could not figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Since I am so late in the game. I am starting to think I am too old for college.I will graduate by the age of 29.How does this affect me in getting a job? I am starting to look around me and notice how late I really am in attending and finishing my bachelors... Any advice would be appreciated.I don't have a full life plan yet of what job I would like to get but assessments place in sales and managerial occupations... If there are any business majors out there please enlighten. Thank You for reading. Alex

Too late? You're barely out of diapers. If you want to be a billionaire by 21, then yes, it's too late. If you want to do what every top businessman and entrepreneur suggests and keep bettering yourself, then absolutely not. Many people take your route and discover college may indeed be the answer even after opting not to attend out of high school. If that's where you think the answer lies then it's what you need to do. Life is long, man. Be the best you that you're capable of for as much of it as possible. Never stop learning, growing or reaching. When you stop, that's when you fail.

I hope not. I never took college serious. The reason for this was that I found my passion for rap music early in life. Me and my friends started making music for fun, but we did spend hours and hours making songs and getting better. We where amateurs, but that does not mean that amateurs can't take their 'hobby' serious. After some years of practicing (by this time we where 18 - 20) we where getting better and better. Nights and days where spend in the studio. Music was all-consuming. We did a lot of shows in the weekend. In the meantime, my parents still believed it was a good idea for me to finish school. But, obviously I kept failing. All my time, energy and thoughts went to writing lyrics and making music. This continued until we where 24. Music was not really going anywhere since rap music was not that big in our country. To draw the picture, the best rapper in our country worked at a bakery in his 'free time' to make money. Right around this time the poker boom happened. I started to play with friends until they didn't think poker was interesting anymore. I disagreed. I found on-line poker, and just like music I spend all my energy on getting better at poker. After a couple of years of playing and making a living out of it I realised I did not want to do this for the rest of my life. At the age of 27 I decided to go back to school. Now, I am in my final year. I believe street knowledge is very important. I learned how to sell myself trough my years as a performer. I learned about people, I learned about team work I learned about creativity, discipline, negotiating.. I learned all kinds of stuf. With poker, I learned even more about people and myself. Now, I am ready to finish a formal education. I have no clue what I am going to do next but I do know that I am not going to be your 9 - 5 employee sitting behind his desk all day. I have not found it yet what I want to do but that's fine. I keep working on daily habits. Those daily habits I learned from people I truly admire. By talking to them and by reading from them. I suggest you do the same, find those habits that you want to develop. Remember that every day you are creating habits, make sure you are creating habits that you can use in the long term. Since you are interested in business, I suggest you look for people to learn from. Find those people you admire and try to search for the habits they have (read autobiographies, talk to CEO's..and ask questions, a lot! Don't be afraid to feel stupid.). Those are the habits you might want to develop. luck is when preparation meets opportunity Make sure you are prepared for when you do know what you want to do with your life.

Many ex-military people start college at your age. What you'll find in college is that your real-world experience will make you better able to assess what you're taught. My spouse went back to college as a sophomore when she was 30. She says now that her real life experience helped her just as I described, and entering so late made her very focused. And she says that she could never have gotten as far as she has without that BA. I would suggest developing a minor in college that nothing to do with business management per se. Every business sells something or other. To rise very far you need both content and form. Business major provides the form, but you haven't addressed content. Could be biology, or engineering, or agronomy, or military science, or, or, or. Something--to show prospective eimployers in that field that you're interested in what that business does for a living.

I am not a business major, but I went into the Navy just out of high school, and then when my enlistment was up I went to college for a couple of years - got married and worked a couple of years, and finally finished my BS at the age of 28. Then I worked one year and went back and got an MS at the age of 30. It worked out fine - I was very late maturing and I believe it all worked out actually for the best. My wife was in her 40s when she decided to take accounting after getting a degree in math education. My daughter was in her 40 with a business degree when she went back to college to become an RN. Maybe my family is very slow in deciding what they want to do with their life - but in all the cases it worked out great. I believe you are fortunate to know what interests you and mature enough to take the course work seriously, and I am confident it will work out fine for you. Don't worry about how old you are because you aren't going to get any younger. Best of luck, Jim

I don't think it's ever too late to start college if you are serious about it. I'm 22 and starting this year. Some people can graduate high school and go right on to college, and that's great for them. Other people aren't ready at that age (I sure wasn't!). As long as you are truly ready and serious it doesn't matter how old you are and 24 isn't even old. You'll get you're degree before you are 30 and can move on to starting a career. You still have plenty of time!

You are worrying about the wrong thingâgoing to college at 24 is no big deal. What you should be worried about is the risk associated with matriculatingâonly one one in four graduate and get a good job. If you are going to need student loans worry about thatâa lot. Most young people who take out loans end up trying to pay them off working part time at Starbucks. Worry about whether the business program at the school you choose is connected to the real world through paid internships. College today is a competition for a few good jobs. Worry about whether you can compete.
