How/where can I sell a Gold old coin (probably has collectible value?

Where can I sell a genuine antique gold coin for a good price?

  • I've a 1788 4 escudos gold coin. I am pretty sure it is genuine. (Sub question: would using nitric acid to determine its authenticity reduce its value?). Where can I sell it so that I get its full collector's value? I wouldn't want to to sell it on eBay for less than its actual worth.

    Using nitric acid will definitely decrease the value. Take it to a coin shop they will tell you if it's genuine. There are some websites that buy precious metals but mostly bullion, I don't know of any that buy specifically collectables.  EBay would be a good place to sell, I've sold coins for more than what they're worth plenty of times. You can put a reserve price on the auction so if it doesn't hit a certain amount, it doesn't sell.

A coin like that is best sold to a specialist dealer - they're the ones most likely to pay you the highest price, particularly if it's a rare type. When testing, you definitely shouldn't do anything that might damage the coin - leave that part of the process to the experts, they'll be able to authenticate the coin just by examining it.

Do not use nitric acid to test the gold because that will definitely lower value. A lot of jewelry and coin shops have a device to test silver and gold non-invasively. Combine this by looking at size, weight, and details, and they can determine its authenticity with a great deal of accuracy.If you're sure it's a great coin, sign up for PCGS membership and send the coins in to be graded. If the grading comes out to something you don't like, you can simply break the coin out of its holder and sell it at a coin show if you don't like eBay. If the coin grades well, it will be easily sellable at a premium on many online sites other than eBay.
