How do I prepare for the Foreign Service Officer exam?

What can one do to prepare for the State Department Foreign Service Officer Exam?

  • Answer:

The Foreign Service Officers Test (http://www.act.org/fsot/) isn't something one can helpfully cram for. It's something that tests a wide array of knowledge, not unlike the TV show "Jeopardy", in fact, but it calls for more than single-sentence answers. The FSOT looks at general knowledge, not any particular specialization. You could say that preparation begins in middle school, where English-language grammar and vocabulary are built and one starts learning history and geography. High school should be deepening that knowledge and broadening it. University study builds on that and includes economics, social studies, perhaps some statistics, even arts. I think broad reading in World History is probably the best way to develop the kind of knowledge that will be tested. You can purchase the Study Guide[1] to get a more exact sense of just what the exam covers. 1. https://services.act.org/OA_HTML/ibeCZzpHome.jsp?minisite=10062&respid=50834&grp=FSOT

as already noted, there are too many things to be covered within the exam, so books on history and government structure (branches, duties/responsibilies) are key.. HOWEVER. from personally speaking with a friend (former US visa officer overseas - i am not sure about the exact title), these are other details: knowledge will possibly get you in but more is needed to actually stay there personal qualities such as ethics, humanity and ability to retain composure under duress are essential there appears to be a certain personality (as a whole) that the exam yields, so if selected, be prepared to be surrounded by others almost just like you this person i am speaking of - a female - is a leader at heart and truly inspires others to do their best.. she is a professional to the core.. i am deeming myself lucky that she transitioned from the government position into the private sector as i get to learn from her each and every day
