What are successful ways to recruit bespoke software architects vs off the shelf software architects?

• First let me say that I'm a big proponent of open source software and the KISS principle when it comes to architecting a software solution.  That being said often times a specific problem requires not just custom business logic to be developed on top of an existing software stack, but to actually further the existing software in a way that isn't just an incremental patch.  (ex: Hive out of Facebook and HBase out of Powerset.  Both were natural extensions of Hadoop, but significant enough that they weren't just Hadoop patches, but rather entirely new projects) My question is how to go about hiring engineers and or software architects that have the necessary skill set to: Think big when it comes to solving a specific business need instead of trying to fit the current capabilities of a piece of software into the problem set. Have the required skill set to start a large project such as this from scratch and deliver a workable product in a reasonable amount of time. Does not try to turn everything into a custom solution.  Really most projects should use available technology when applicable.  As a next resort they should patch existing technology to make it fit the business need.  And only as a last resort should they look at building something custom.  When the custom development/project is necessary they should also look for ways to contribute this back to the community. Generally I'm asking what skill set and past experience should I be looking for.  Is it a specific subset of software engineers that fit this bill and if so how do they self identify?
