What classes to take for architectual design?

If I want to pursue a career in UI/UX mobile design, What degree should I move towards or Which classes should I take?

  • I originally figured that pursing a degree in Software engineering would be the way to go but was deterred by the fact that this does not truly take into account the desires of an individual. I want to work at a large company that has a developed UI/UX mobile design team such as Apple, Google, Facebook, etc. I have no clue which degrees these companies look for. Would pursuing a major in architecture and minor in computer engineering be a good balance between computers and people's tentative needs for software? All answers are appreciated. Thank you!

  • Answer:

I'm not an expert in UI/UX, but have strong interests in the field. However, I did graduate from an architecture school (studied urban planning). There are several architecture graduates I am aware of who eventually transitioned into UI/UX, so the path is definitely very doable. You do learn and get tons of practice in design software and design. Granted, it might be very specific to architecture, but the skills are transferable. In the hackathons I've attended in SF, I've met several former architects who want to transition into UI/UX design. They've had so much intense practice. Granted, I don't know how the programs are like in your schools, but the workload for architecture students are quite intense. The degree matters less and your experience (side projects, etc.) is much more important. My recommendation is to focus less on what degree you are actually studying, and focus on how many quality projects you can crank out. ** Edit, it's 1am California time. I'll update this with a more detailed response later in the day tomorrow.

I started out as a print graphic designer, then moved into web design and the last few years I've been doing UX design and visual design for both desktop and mobile. I would suggest you get a degree in web design/development. Keep in mind that some UX/UI Designer roles differs from one another, at some company they might ask you to do everything from wireframing, research, build prototype and visual design. While at other company they just want you to do the visual design and some wireframing. If you can code, design and have a grasp understanding of UX design principles then you'll be even more attractive to potential employers. Degree is not that important to most employers, they want to know what you've done in the past. So I would suggest you intern or work with a start up company to gain more experience. Hope this helps.
