How do you sort your music collection?

More pedantic than innovative, the way i do it is Artist name / Year - Album name I figured that separating them into genres would not only do the artists no justice, but also be quite hard, as a lot of music i listen to is influenced by and/or a mix of various genres. Thus when it comes to genres, i leave it up to my media library software to sort them out.

Alphabetically within genres. So Rock: A...Z. British Folk Instrumentalists: A...Z The exception is Classical, which I sort by date of composition. This is for vinyl, which I have a lot of. For CDs it's just alphabetically by artist, and within each artist, chronologically by date of release. (And sometimes exceptions when CDs of "rare" tracks are released. I put them where they would be had they been released. If the "rare" tracks are from more than one year I just put them last.) I have to say that having a system like this--if it is a system--makes moving and restocking the shelves a bit of a pain.

i mainly sort it alphabetically and i have a folder per band and inside that folder i have all the albums of the band (hopefully) P > Pink Floyd > Wish You Were Here There are exceptions to these role as i sometimes have a folder for some genres or for Bootlegs or Soundtracks or Compilations which are on the same level of the Letter P
