What were some jobs in the 80's?

How might the Mac have evolved if Steve Jobs had reigned at Apple through the 80s and 90s?

  • This is SPECIFICALLY about the Mac, unlike other similar questions about Apple in general.

  • Answer:

You don't need to look very far: the Mac you see today is mostly technology developed by NeXT Computer, Inc., which Steve Jobs ran from 1985 to 1996 when Apple bought NeXT. Many applications from the NeXTStep OS are pretty much the same today in Mac OS X, for example: Terminal.app and Mail.app. The underpinning technology of Mac OS X is also from NeXT: the Mach-O file format, a Mach kernel with a BSD subsystem, Mac OS X's Display PDF (aka Quartz) as an evolutionary improvement from NeXTStep's Display Postscript technology. Some NeXT hardware was compatible with Macs of that era, for example the NeXT ADB keyboard used the Apple Desktop Bus and could be plugged into a Mac. Same applies for the mouse. To study that evolution, one might want to study the hardware lineup from NeXT over time. This wikipedia entry has some of the highlights: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NeXT
