Overrated : VIT , Manipal (MIT) , few NITs (the new ones) Underrated : Regional govt colleges like IIITD, IGIT Delhi etc . Basically, it's the quality of students who make any college's reputation. And please the colleges claiming to be having 100% placements. Dude? Mass recruiter tie-up? Because none of the colleges have 100% placements every year. I have seen many studdents flunking or ineligible for sitting in placements due to "back ki dukaan " in IITs and top ranked NITs.

Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi. Majorly underrated due to its name(mostly) and less number of seats.Faculty of Engg. and Tech, being a part of a huge university can only afford only 350 students per batch. > Negligible fees, almost 30K for complete 4 years( rub your eyes, you read correct).Education is highly subsidized by central government grants. >You get a central university degree which has good value in Western Asia,US and Japan apart from India. >Classrooms, reading rooms, libraries, labs etc are all good with AC's and modern IT services. >Computer science offers great opportunities for students, being in Delhi the placements are mostly decent to good depending upon students performance. Sun Lab,Apple Lab,OS Lab etc are good with modern facilities, experienced staff and good learning atmosphere.Linux user group and open source group are active and good. 7 students got selected in the last GSoC. >Other core branches like civil, mech, electrical and electronics also boast some of the most qualified professors and studies are very regular and disciplined. >Sports Facilities are probably the best for any engg college in India.International level grounds, running tracks, gym etc and the amazing sports complex is a must visit for any Jamia student. >Don't know about other courses but students from B.Tech regularly go to top B-Schools like IIM's,XRLI,FMS etc.Same goes for Masters in US,Japan and Europe. This year 30 students cracked the UPSC Civil Services from whole Jamia. >One thing i feel from the bottom of my heart is that jamia teaches you something that probably no other engg. college teaches no vividly, ie adaptability and happiness in diversity.Almost 60% population in muslims and rest are most hindus or sikhs. Children are from almost all parts of India. There is a diversity in religion,in languages and mostly the way of living.Amazing to have such an experience.

Underrated: BITS Pilani, ISM Dhanbad, IT BHU, Jamia Millia. Overrated: BIT Mesra( mainly because its admission is still influenced by politicians and bureaucrats of Jharkhand), IIT's ( because of their lack of good research work, majority of professors are busy satisfying their big egos, minority who are really good can't satisfy the need of the country. They are still running on the back of good students.) I am not naming Universities like Amity, VIT cas they are more about ads than teaching.

News of recently held ACM world regionals at Amritapuri 2013 was covered by the Hindu. It had big pic of team from IITB who came second and just name of the team from IIIT-H and that too just once in whole article who came first. This explains all about biasness by the media and overhypers. Link: http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Coimbatore/international-conference-on-communication-held/article5557061.ece

Most overrated: I believe all, and by all, I mean, all. Because, media only projects the placement part of Undergraduate, is Engineering degree all about placements, IT and coding? Think about this please. Problem with Indian Education System is that acads is always rated high, hence IIT JEE is given more hype, but, industry problems are different, and academics hardly comes in handy there. As long as, India's education system will be governed by politicians and academics, things will never change, and this glut will remain and middle classes will have to suffer a lot. And we also have this mindset, clearing an exam means genius, so obviously, people plays on our nerves. Most Underrated: As people have mentioned here, there are quite good number of Engineering colleges, which are underrated. But my statement will come a contradictory, because, I have said that all colleges are overrated. But, still ,I will go with this, I think the most underrated college in India is Manipal Institute of Technology. People have some negative thinking about it, barring that, it actually is a great place, but only for those, who have desire and heart to study.

"underrated and overrated"- i don't think that the engineering colleges in india need such classification in order to guide the aspiring engineering graduates to take admission into it. the reply to this question by others is definitely going to be very "vague" and would differ from person to person. under rated: bits (a private engineering college but better than many govt. colleges) and over rated: many private engineering colleges(money suckers) eg lpu, vit, srm, shobhit, manav rachna, galgotias, smu, sharda (these are not universities these are shops). its not safe to take admission into any of the colleges which have been ranked lower than 40 , by any of the national surveys generally conducted by the private bodies like "India Today" "career 360" etc.

One of the most underrated college of India is BIT mesra, Ranchi This college has always been deprived of the accolades that it deserves. 1. Has a glorious history of 57 years. 2.Gargantuan campus that sprawls over 780 acres of land. 3.Has always been ranked within Top 15 engineering colleges of the country. 4.About 100 companies visit for campus recruitment every year. 5.Almost all highly revered companies like Facebook, Microsoft, Directi , epic,IOCL,goldman-sach etc visit regularly, 6. Hostels are far better than NITs and even IITs providing single rooms for all 4 years. Still if you tell anyone outside jharkhand,Bihar that you study at Birla institute of technology, http://www.way2college.com/top-100-engineering-colleges-in-india.htm

Well there are many colleges in India which are Underrated(almost all of them are mentioned here) but among those which are Overrated the most are: IIPM-- One of the worst management colleges in India with the worst ever Dean-Arindam Chaudhuri

I can't say for other colleges like Amity or LPU being exception but if we make a list of ranking by arranging college names lexicographically, VIT will finally learn it's TRUE ranking.
