FOOLHARDY Instead of fundamentally enabling them (opressed and minorities) by allowing them fair access to primary education, handing out stuff at higher levels not only corrupts the integrity of the very system but also hampers the very basic nature of learning and innovation. They already have efficiently ruined the admission process in various educational institutions and government jobs, now implementing the same ideology in the private sector as well would be a step further in tainting the free culture of businesses and competition. To be very honest it is a very efficient cover up for government's inability to deliver a fair environment for every individual at every level. What is even more pathetic is that a person of such stature supporting this cause in order to fulfill his political ambitions.

The private sector in India is rife with the term "pehechan". That is, people try to secure a job for their sons or relatives in their company, regardless of merit. You need good "contacts" and refrences from influential people to get any good job. In such an atmosphere, can you imagine how a qualified person from the backward caste could get a job if none of his relatives are even educated? People commenting here will pretend that the private sector in India is somehow this bastion of freedom, this great sector that has only meritocracy but the truth is totally different and very ugly.

In short: Typical Congressi . Instead of enabling people to make the best of themselves, spoonfeeding them: WILL NEVER do the needful. It will only widen the already-widened gap that we have in our society.

I think that this is a step in the right direction. I hope that no one here will contest the fact that SC/ST/OBCs are way underrepresented in higher education and employment, both in the government and private sectors. Reservation helps to take care of this under-representation to some level, and also helps reduce discrimination at the workplace and provide role models. I believe that in the Indian context, reservation is a necessity. It is good that the government provides reservation in its own jobs. But the government can only employ so many people. Private sector employers could have taken the decision themselves to follow affirmative action policies and ensure representation of women and SC/ST/OBCs. But how many Indian corporates do that? Compounded with this is the fact that : A lot of hiring in private sector happens based on word of mouth and recommendations. As a result, it is easier for those with contacts to get jobs. It is also easier for personal prejudices based on caste and gender to shut people out. An SC/ST/OBC with no connections would find it way harder to land in such a private sector job as opposed to a government job. Given the private sector's complete reluctance to do anything about affirmative action, it is reasonable for the government to mandate it.

It is utter foolishness. What great has the reservation done to the country as a whole. The underprivileged are still struggling to go to school due to lack of facilities and finance to pursue education. It is the middle class SC/ST or OBC who've already reached a level of Financial well being and all their children are Engineers and Doctors by now. Instead provide them facility and financial aid so that they can afford good education and stand on their feet. Make them stand on their own rather than making them habituated to wheel chair of Reservation

According to my experience, the following statement made by you is completely false. "An SC/ST/OBC with no connections would find it way harder to land in such a private sector job as opposed to a government job." In fact, these are the people who are the most corrupt and who have the maximum number of contacts. The middle class people from general category have few or no contacts at all and that is why few of them try for a government job. And some people support this completely unfair and biased system and want reservation in private sector jobs also. “He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have.” ― Socrates Put a limit to your greediness, people. Where do you want all the general category people to go? Should all of them leave the country? Should they cease to exist?
