How do fake Apple stores in China get real Apple products to sell?
-
Apple has very tight control over their supply chain; doesn't this strongly suggest that Apple is selling genuine Apple products to sell in these fake stores? http://www.tealeafnation.com/2013/06/chinas-copycat-phenomenon-fake-apple-stores-booming-in-southern-china/

Answer:
Before Official Apple stores were a common sight in major cities across the world, there was the "licensed reseller." That's. All. These. Stores. Are. UNlicensed resellers. For the large majority of these stores, the products are as real as you can get. With a slight increase in price if any. I bought my MacBook Pro 2 years ago from a "Fake Apple Store" in Yangzhou, Jiangsu. The guy asked me if I wanted a mainland China version or a Hong Kong version. The Hong Kong version came at 1000RMB cheaper with a UK power supply so I opted for the latter. That was it. There is no story here, just western media sensationalism/out of date view of China.

For many Apple products in China, demand far outstretched the supply. When new items were released in places like Hong Kong, Japan, or Australia, many organized purchasing efforts were put in place to buy products at the retail price in those country, 'import' (i.e. smuggle) them into China, and then resell them at a premium. These fake Apple stores are not necessarily selling at the MSRP for Apple products, but often have a premium. The story of iPhone and iPad smuggling into China are all over the Internet. MICGadget (Made in China Gadget) had extensive coverage of the iPhone 4S launch, and the smuggling insanity that took place. http://micgadget.com/17607/3000-people-line-up-for-hong-kong-iphone-4s-launch/ They also covered the 'flying iPads' which were winched by pulley across the river every night when the Hong Kong and Chinese border patrols were diminished. http://micgadget.com/14342/flying-smuggled-ipad-in-the-air-video/ This website often runs the current grey market prices for bulk purchases of iPhones and iPads in China (note: as there is nothing 'new' in the Apple store right now there are not many items listed) http://www.iphone4hongkong.com
