How do I start a cover letter?

When applying for an internship, is it smart and okay to mention my start date (if it's really soon), on my cover letter? Just to clear up facts?

  • and what can you think of that can make the recruiter(HR) to consider me for an interview just by looking at my cover letter?

  • Answer:

Most companies don't require cover letters, but for those who do, it is my understanding that the cover letter provides more of an introduction of yourself and why you want to work for the company. So, it's not necessary to put when your start date is for an internship that you don't have yet. It would be appropriate to state the general start date (ie, Summer 2014, Spring 2014, etc) to give them an idea of what you're looking for, but outside of that, I personally think it's unnecessary. If you get an offer, your recruiter will clarify and provide a start date or start date options for you.

Most big tech companies won't just let you start "whenever", as they have preset orientation dates (for example, FB has intern orientation every two weeks). So it's highly probable that you wouldn't be able to start on whatever date you mention in your cover letter.
