Google: Isn't asking people to "Install Google Chrome" against the policy of Don't be Evil?

  • Google asks people to install Google Chrome browser on its homepage. This single web page is undoubtedly the most viewed web page in the world. By placing this banner on their homepage and asking people to install Google Chrome, isn't Google trying to monopolize the browser market? Advertising is fine. But when a company has an unfair advantage like this (having most viewed web page in the world), it simply doesn't feel "right" to do so. IE has Microsoft and Windows behind it, so it can still afford to play the game. But, Firefox is open source (and Chrome too is based on open source Chromium) - in this case, it simply doesn't seem fair to block people from using one open source product over the other. It is not evil considering all of the big players try to do the same thing. Microsoft has IE, a shitty browser, as the default browser on the biggest platform in the world. Now THAT is evil.

In case you were not aware: asking someone to do something and forcing someone to do something are different things. It's not like Google refuses to work for you if you don't use Chrome. Yeesh. If this is a legitimate concern for you, I envy how marvelous your life must be.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evil describes willful, immoral acts. It also serves as a blanket term for bad things. - Wikipedia Is it bad for Google to push Chrome? Not necessarily. If Chrome is the force driving positive change then the answer to your question is NO. Otherwise the answer is maybe, but you have to dig very deep into semantics and morals to be sure.

I don't feel that it is evil. Just for an example, Mozilla Foundation is funded almost entirely by Google( according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Foundation ). I have read that a condition for funding is that Firefox would have to use Google search engine a place on its default start page. That is not evil. It shows that they are not trying to do an evil monopoly. Google recognizes the importance of talent and promotes it. To survive in the market you always have to push yourself. Moreover, Chrome as well as chromium are known to be among the most secure browsers and I would like to see the web secure.
