Homes and Houses: If I had half a wall already painted white, can I find a can of paint so similar to the one on the wall, such that no one will be able to spot the difference between the two paints?
-
It seems that each paint can be specified by so many different parameters even though they can both be called "white". There might be different shades of white (perhaps some more gray and some which actually fluorescence?), different glossiness and different viscoscity. The paintbrush used might also cause the texture of the painted surface to be different. The person applying the paint might use different strokes, which could show up on the painted wall. If you had no idea how the first half of the wall was painted, could you ever paint the second half of the wall to look exactly the same as the first?

Answer:
If you take a paint chip to a paint store, they can often match pretty well. Some even have computerized matchers. But ultimately, it depends on the condition of the existing paint. If it is worn or scuffed or weathered then replicating the pattern of that may not be possible. I'd just paint the whole thing. It shouldn't take that much longer.

It would be best to paint the entire wall with new paint considering the following: 1) The current white paint on the wall could be faded (direct sunlight, wear&tear) 2) Without knowing the paint manufacturer it would be difficult to match the existing paint exactly resulting in a noticeable color or slight sheen difference where the old paint meets the new paint. If it is just one wall in a room have you considered making it a feature wall and painting it a different color then the other walls :) Hope this helps.

You're correct. Most paint manufacturers have about 20 versions of "white". If you can match the paint on your wall to a paint sample from the store, then you should be OK. But the paint sheen is more important than the color. This sounds illogical, but I have watched James Hardie siding painted Country Lane Red (factory color) turn light purple in the right sunlight at the right angle. So get a Sheen sample, too, so you know what the original paint was. And when you're rolling the new paint on, buy enough to cover most of the old paint with a light coat, too.
