Why do comedians crack very lame jokes assuming it would make the audience laugh?

There are a lot of comedy sequences and dialogues / oneliners, which hardly makes anyone laugh , but still , a lot of money is invested in making it.why?

Because comedy is not a scientific equation. You do not know the out come even if you have all the initial parameters. You have to execute it to know whether you will fail or succeed. Same goes for the movie industry or as such the whole of entertainment industry. Your question can be asked by substituting jokes for movies/songs. You do not know what the crowd will like from the beginning unless your Steve Jobs. Also a joke though lame can be extremely funny if delivered perfectly. I am pretty sure if George Carlin cracks knock knock jokes, they will still crack me up.
