Is Hetta and Hatta Village the same? Why?

Why do so many people say that the West Village is the obvious choice as an awesome place for someone in their late 20s to live?

  • The West Village is by far the most popular and decisive answer that I hear, though I wonder what are the reasons, and I wonder if someone and technology if the East Village is a better place because I have heard that a lot of tech people and artists live there.

  • Answer:

Not many people who work in tech earn enough money to live comfortably in the West Village. Yeah, even that hip developer with a high salary (for tech). Rent for a 1BR in the village is between $3k-5k/mo. The East Village is cooler, has fewer grubby NYU kids, and is cheaper. Who can afford to live in the West Village except for people in rent controlled apartments, people with infinity dollars, NYU people who aren't grad student slave labor, and old rich people? If you work in tech and have an ordinary tech salary, you're spending beyond your means if you live in the West Village. The reason why people say the West Village is the 'obvious choice' is because it's fashionable to spend oodles of money to keep up appearances by living in an expensive and formerly-youthful neighborhood.

I think that by "the West Village," you mean "Brooklyn." The West Village was the obvious choice for a young up and comer back when Bob Dylan lived there. Now it's more like the obvious choice for Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Living in the East Village is like living in Williamsburg or the Mission in SF, hip in that vomit-on-the-sidewalk kind of way. But really, the main issue is subway access. Unless you work in Wall St or on the Upper East side, the East Village SUCKS for transit access. I lived over there for a while, and while it's fun neighborhood, I found that it had a lot more gravity the the West Village, in the sense that it becomes really easy to just always go out near where you live. I found the West Village gave fast access to other places I wanted to go, and thus, I saw and did more around the city in general when I was based there. Also, note that the W. Village has the rep of being more safe and quiet then the East Village, which is another reason it's so highly recommended by many.

I'm 28 and moved from Brooklyn (Williamsburg/Greenpoint area) to the West Village about a year and a half ago. Yes, for the most part rent is outrageously high, but not always. There are great deals, if you search - the only thing is, the people that have those great deals tend to hold onto them for dear life or pass them directly on to friends. I don't even make a 'tech salary' and certainly do not have infinity dollars, but was able to find a beautiful brownstone studio for less than the cost of a similar space in Brooklyn - on Craigslist, of all places. I know other people who have done the same. Regarding the area itself - the East Village has its charms, but on the whole it's louder, more full of raucous bars, and grittier than the WV. The West Village is quieter, with lots of dogs, families and high end restaurants. In terms of transport, the West Village wins hands-down. In terms of bars, the East Village (and proximity to Alphabet City) probably wins it.
