What is a good product to sell for profit?

Is it legal to purchase product "A" and break it apart and use some of its components to make a new product "B" and sell the new product for a profit?

  • I am assuming product A is not protected under any patent and there's no IP protecting A. Only some of the parts in A are used to simplify manufacturing and making of product B. For example, I want to make a new hammer. Can I buy a hammer, use its head together with a new handle I have designed, and sell it under a new brand/name for a profit? Can I get sued by the company that makes the old hammer?

  • Answer:

Yes you can. However- watch out for any trademarks on product A that you cannot remove. That's your sticking point in the scenario you present- since you do not want people to be confused about who makes their final product.

Agreed, assuming no patents, legal.

Watch also for any terms of use for product A (common when product A is given away or at a discount). However, your profit will be much higher if you simply buy the parts you need directly. Say the hammer costs $20 to buy and the cost of the hummer head is $5, you just added $15 extra on your bill of materials.
