What was the marketing logic of naming the movie Don Jon?

  • Who were they trying to appeal to? What marketing message / signals were they trying to convey? The movie name doesn't seem that great to me (compared to the movie, which I loved), which is why I'm asking.

    "Don Jon" is a reference to Don Juan, the legendary libertine (and seducer of women). Besides seducing women, Don Juan indulged in various sins in life - including violence, murder and impiety (inviting the statue of the man he killed to dinner). This parallels Jon Martello, who can bed more or less every woman he sets his sights on, is violent (at least by modern standards - smashing the car window certainly is violent) and impious (weekly insincere confessions). The English version of "Juan" is John (which is almost the same as Jon), and Don is an honorific (at the time referring to noblemen) which parallels Jon's status as an alpha male (excepting his job). His "boys" also call him "The Don".

The movie was originally called "DON JON'S ADDICTION", but the distributor was nervous about the connotations of the word "addiction". they felt it would put a darker spin on the subject matter that would run counter to their positioning of the movie in the marketing material, which was comedy-ish.  At one point I pitched "The Gospel According to the Don", to play into the idea that he's giving the audience his world-view and the whole catholic absolvences bit that runs through the movie, but no one liked that.  Would you have liked that better?
