Where to Park at Luton Airport?

Travel: What is the best way to get to Sheffield from Luton airport by public transport?

  • I'm flying to the UK and landing at Luton airport. Going to stay at this address: Q Park Broad Street West Sheffield S1 2BQ . What is the best way to get from the airport to Sheffield (and back) by means of public transport ? Google maps has its suggestions but I'd much rather get advice from people with "feet on" experience :). I would prefer changing buses/trains as little as possible, even if it means prolonging travel time. Thanks!

  • Answer:

If you book 2 weeks in advance the train fare is around £26.00 Its a two hour journey. If not it goes up massively up to £100. The cheapest one way ticket is £16, but that does mean booking in advance The train does involve some changes but these aren't difficult. At Leicester you basically get out of the train, stay on the same platform and wait for the next one. From the airport to Luton Airport Parkway to the train station there is a free bus, it might now charge but it isn't much. A cheaper option is the National Express Coach. It also stops at Milton Keynes for a change. It has the advantage that you don't have to book in advance and is around £20. The advantage of the train is it is much more comfortable. You can book a ticket online if you have a credit card http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ this is the cheapest. You can collect the ticket by automated machine at the station. The standard cheap return is between £32 and £52 by train, depending on whether you travel off-peak or not. The train service is pretty reliable.

One of the best ways to plan a public transport journey in the UK is using Traveline. You can choose from various route options and modes of transport. Bus/ coach may be the cheapest and involve the fewest changes. From a cursory search, the fastest journey I found on a weekday was 4hrs 30mins and involved 1 change. A journey by bus/ coach/ train may be more expensive, but quicker. A cursory search suggested around 2hrs 45mins, with 2 changes. http://www.travelinesoutheast.org.uk If you're looking for dirt cheap journeys and don't mind a bit of extra effort, Megabus can be a great option to consider. If you can get to Milton Keynes via a local bus or Leicester (possibly via the free bus service mentioned by Joe), there's a Megabus service running to Sheffield. Book in advance and you can probably get tickets for £1. They also run train services, although there are none in place for the route you're looking for. http://uk.megabus.com/

By planning ahead you can save yourself a lot of money. There is a number of route options but if you opt for a private taxi you should try and choose a company that is reliable and reputable. If you decide to use public transport you should always plan your journey head to avoid any problems etc.
