I'm currently interning in the music industry (have been for 6 months) and am hoping to get a full time job in the industry soon. However, I was told that it's near impossible to get an entry level job with a year's experience. Even if you have contacts, does it take years to get a full time job?

Answer:
It's not impossible, but depending on the job you are going after the years of experience can vary. With the music industry, I think people already in it will tell you that it takes time to pay your duesâwe all certainly have. While you are six months in, there is still always so much more to learn. Get as much experience out of your internship as you can and then move onto another one. What is most appealing for someone looking to hire is a diverse resume, duration, and a willingness to learn the ins-and-outs of the industry. For those already in it, many have spent time being a promoter, booking, or taking on side projects whether it is mixing, producing, managing, etc. Many musicians and bands have experienced rejection after rejection as well as that "big break" if they've gotten there already and the same can probably be said for you and your future career in the music industry. Just rememberâhard work pays off and while contacts can help your situation it doesn't mean that you are allowed to feel entitled.

The answer really depends on two things, where you live and what you want to do. If you want to work in the Music Industry, the best places to be are Los Angeles, New York and Nashville with Austin a distant 4th. If you are living in one of those cities, an internship can be a great way to start. My advice is to get your foot in the door at a company you admire and then make yourself indispensable. This can mean working long hours for not much money but it's a great way to learn the industry.
