What is it like to be recruited by a service based IT company as your first job, but later you happen to realize that you haven't learned much and your profile is not deserving enough for you to get a job (with quality work) in a Product Based IT company?

For eg : You join Infosys as a fresher, underwent that 5-6 month training, say in Java, but once you enter into production and were alloted to a project in say, Retail domain ( or Life Sciences domain) with the nature of work mostly being Support & Maintenance ( even Testing as well ) . Not just this, you were alloted to do flat batch monitoring ( Mainframe work ) and all your training in java feel like of no use. You kept doing work assigned on daily basis, and there is nothing much to learn, meanwhile, those concepts of Java that you had learned, started getting diminished due to lack of hands-on. Wait, you have to either work in morning or evening shifts, with only alternate weekends as holiday. Now you want to revive your career, say after bearing all this for 2-3 years. But how ?

Answer:
Even joining a smaller (<250) organization will be helpful. There are many small software development firms which can value your Java training (if you still remember what you have learned)... You will get a much better experiance and you will learn a lot and build your skills. As the project sizes in smaller organiations is smaller, you get to work on multiple projects and you will be part of mulitple phases of the application development Process.

I was recruited in a big service based company, during my campus placement. They had a 2 month training program. I was trained in java. It was downright basics, nowhere near the kind of code you would write for an enterprise application. After the training, they had randomly assigned people from our batch to various projects, irrespective of what language you are trained in. I was one of the unlucky ones. They assigned me a project in performance testing department!! This was hard to understand. By the end of third month, I started getting frustrated, because I had nothing to do. I would use to just linger around the big company campus or pass time in the recreational area. I started thinking of switching the company and my peers were pessimistic about the whole decision. Anyways I applied for another medium scale consulting company. I got selected. Fortunately, my experience here so far is much more enjoyable. If you feel the workplace is not right for you, move on.

Join a startup. May be it will mean you will have to start from square one and say good bye to your ego. Down the line it will all be worth it. Startups can be harsh but once you are into them its a lot of fun. Each day you will have loads of work to do, work that really impacts a business.

If you have already joined such a company don't be let down. It's downright true that they allot people to a particular domain thinking of them as just a resource. So if you have a specific goal or type of work in mind then make the hard choice to search for it. If salary is what drives you then service companies allows you plenty growth but if your interest conflicts a lot with your work then its a problem. If you missed your opportunity to get into a product dev company straight after your academics then ,What I've found is that joining a startup or mid level company which does exactly what you want is the smartest choice, if you can financially manage yourself to get through on a relatively small salary for a while, up to 3 years even. But after that you are a candidate that any product dev company will be willing to recruit.

Read all the other suggestions. You can also consider applying for Bank PO in case you want to stay near home town. This is a very logical suggestion. You do not have any skill and I can feel that you want to work in a Product based IT company. This is next to impossible. From what I know about the Engineers in the Product based IT companies is that, they are generally from Tier-I Engineering colleges, they work very hard to develop their skills at a Programming languages/Competitive Programming. Thus by the end of four years they are able to get into these top notch companies. Practicing programming languages while staying in a company is next to impossible, according to me. Why would a company pay to any of his employee for learning a programming language ? In that case you would shift from one company to the other in search of better quality peers/better salary/ more self respect. Which can't be obtained with the tag of un-skilled labour which you have. So applying for several government vacancies can be an option. Eg. Bank PO IAS etc Just a suggestion, see which option suits you. All the best. It is very good that you have decided to make your life more meaningful.
