What are good ways to prepare for an MBA entrance exam when you are doing a job?

I'm an engineering graduate working at one of the biggest infrastructure MNC's on the planet. My office hrs. are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. After the office, I rush to gym (to me which is the most important thing of the day). After gym and dinner I reach home at about 9 p.m. I feel too tired to pick up a book or to even read a news article. How do I get my MBA preparation going?

That sounds like a lot of excuses to me. When I was preparing for the GMAT, I was working about 60+ hours a week at my job, was married, and had other commitments as well. However, for the two months that I prepared for that exam, the GMAT was my priority. Every weekday after dinner, I spent 3-4 hours studying (going to bed around midnight or 1 am each day) and each weekend day, I spent 6-8 hours studying. Based on the schedule you outlined (even including your significant amount of gym time which you might want to consider moving to early mornings), it sounds like you should be able to make that work if you are committed. Being "too tired" is no excuse. If you're unmotivated, signing up for a class helps you stay on schedule. I took a Princeton Review class although most people seem to recommend Manhattan GMAT courses and books. The Official Guide to the GMAT is your bible and you'll want to go through pretty much all of that as well as take a bunch of practice tests throughout your prep. Whether you go the self study route or self study paired with a class, I'd recommend checking out http://www.beatthegmat.com and http://www.gmatclub.com. Both are invaluable resources for both GMAT prep as well as learning more about the MBA admissions process. It's a lot of work but really, it doesn't get easier after the test. Business school applications require a lot of work as well and frankly, business school is fun but requires a great deal of time and effort as well. Best of luck.

My first advise is don't waste your weekends. Make the most of it. And you should know in what are all the sections, like apti or english or DI, you are weak. take those things in weekends.Spend 10-12 hrs per day. And in weekdays, in your case, get up early in the morning and sit atleast for 2 hrs and while traveling to office try to go through formulas and refresh your grammar.. And most important of all. Regardless of your preparation , take Mock test.Take as much you can. That will give you confidence and tells you in which sections you should concentrate more.

Depending on your comfort level with standardized tests and how well you remember high-school math and english, GMAT prep can be a month-long or a longer affair. It is important to ascertain your goals in terms of target scores and schools and get a sense of your current level of preparation prior to devising a test-prep strategy. Many, if not all, applicants to top-tier schools would have a work-schedule as grueling or even crazier than what you have so you shouldn't be overly pessimistic about not having enough time to study. Follow the Pareto Principle to master your individual key problem areas before moving to the marginally important topics to get the most out of your prep time. I would encourage you to start with a diagnostic test to get to know where you stand right now. Analyze your weak areas and strong suits and get a good handle on areas that you will be focusing on before jumping headfirst into preparing for the exam. It is absolutely critical to note that your prep strategy need not be the same as someone else's. For instance, an Indian engineer might find Sentence Correction more challenging than say an American liberal arts major, whereas the latter might need to spend more time on Quant than the former applicant. In other words, Get to know what you need to improve before you start the improvement process. As mentioned by , a class might be a good way to stay motivated and on schedule but the tradeoff between flexibility (self-study) and structure (class) is an individual decision that you outta make by yourself. The key is to closely measure your progress and make sure you stick to a plan, whether inside class or outside it. I am assuming that you are targeting the 2014 admissions cycle so you have enough time on hand to prepare for the exam and write a solid application. Good Luck! Our internet-based, interactive course is in open beta and I would encourage you to check it out and let us know what you think.
