What are some good courses to take for a person interested in Systems?

• I am a Masters student in computer science with interest in Systems. I want to work for system based companies like Vmware. What are some good courses to take at university/online courses/books or any other tips to prepare myself in it (with a focus to get a job in systems domain).

  1) Operating systems - yes the obvious one. Make sure the course offers writing a small operating system on your own. In my university the professor made the students to write an basic core level functions using http://www.eecs.harvard.edu/~syrah/os161/ Students spent atleast 20 hours a week on this course alone. Talk to previous year students who took the course, if they say the course did not take lot of painstaking efforts, then its not worth. 2) Distributed systems - Though it might not be useful if you are fully working into single operating system kernel. But I know in Vmware they do lot of distributed systems stuff. My friend attended an interview with Vmware, and he was grilled with lot of questions on distributed systems. After taking these course, your interest might change, you may not want to work in systems side. Honestly I would not recommend you to take a course, because you want to join a company. Try to take different courses, and find your interest, and apply to the companies who work in your area of interest.
