How to stop Youtube player from showing related videos?

YouTube shows personalised "related videos" to me even though I didn't sign in to YouTube - what to do?

  • This is a recent change as far as I can tell. The column with the so called "related videos" used to be good in suggesting related videos, however, I've noticed recently that many videos popping up there are related to my recent views. And I'm not even signed in to YouTube (although I'm signed into GMail in the same browser). I'm concerned about my privacy and I don't know what to do other than to stop visiting YouTube.

  • Answer:

Your browser history is keeping track of what videos you have viewed because it is a record of each and every page you've visited. Clear your history and cache and you'll be fine. Also note that they can use a cookie to track your activity in one session. There is nothing shocking or privacy invading about this if done ethically. You wouldn't be able to do online shopping without it or the website would forget what you ordered before you get through the screens for entering credit card info. That doesn't mean that Google is making a log of what your computer did and saving it. Their privacy statements proclaim that they do not invade your privacy in this manner.
