More so for business customers, but consumer accounts are often offered waived activation fees, discounted equipment ( in the form of a bill credit, they are contractually not allowed to manually discount an iPhone) and other bill incentive credits to offset part of an early termination fee which may be incurred from your current carrier. Negotiate to find the best offer, both in the store with a manager, and on the phone with telesales - then take the better offer. In today's saturated wireless market, carriers will give you a better deal than advertised to get your business.
