What does it take for an Indian with bachelors in Computer Science to get admission in an Ivy League University/other Top US university for Masters in Computer Science?
-
I am a final year student of Bachelors in Computer Science from a private university in India. I want to pursue MS in Computer Science from a top US University. As for my background, I have 8.8/10 GPA with two research papers in the field of data mining/machine learning. I request the community to kindly help me out by answering a few questions: 1. I don't really plan on pursuing PhD. after MS. Which universities would be good for me to apply to? 2. In order to get those universities, what GRE score should I be aiming for? 3. I have a job offer as a Software Developer from a very good MNC, will work experience there help me get the admission? I was thinking of working 1 or 2 years and then applying. But if the work experience is pointless, then I won't bother with it. 4. What should be my approach now? Do I need to get a few more publications? As my final semester project, should I undertake a research project in my current university or a job as a coder/developer in some company (maybe a startup?) ? Thank you.

A seriously underrated requirement is something that makes you appear willing to stick out the shear hell that it is to get an advanced degree from one of these institutions. I did not have a single publication to my name when I was accepted to Georgia Tech CS (not to mention that I bombed my CS GRE with a 6th percentile back when these were offered). What made them accept me was that I had spent the last two years spending weekend mornings at a professors house letting him prepare me for graduate school taking the equivalent of the first two years of graduate school courses in addition to a 21 hour undergraduate course load. FYI I finished in 2.5 years with a 3.98 GPA. When entered I asked what made the difference and they said they really just look for people that have the drive above anything else because no amount of brains gets you through grad school.
