Is computer programming useful in the business world?

How can a non-technical business person best become conversant in the programming world -- without the time investment of learning to code?

  • I harbor no delusions that I'll be able to build an app from scratch, but having a high-level understanding of the theory, processes, and "big issues" that coders face seems important to really grasp the business side of digital media. Smart strategy (I would think) hinges on understanding what capabilities are out there and how they may evolve. Can anyone recommend good resources -- books, articles, methods, etc. -- to help get started?

    I know exactly what you mean. I am an attorney by trade but a programmer for fun and I've seen too many clients lose and delay because they cannot communicate properly with their tech team or tech consultant. No matter what it takes time and experience but I have two suggestions: (1) join and have fun with a local programming meetup to hang out with programmers and (2) go to http://www.codecademy.com/ and check out their very EASY, fun, interactive tutorials in coding. To communicate properly, you need to understand that there are a hundred ways to program to get to the same result and communicating properly your objectives may determine a programmer's approach. What you are trying is : "I want to learn swimming without getting myself into water and get wet". Since you want to learn aspects related to programming, then you will have to get your hands dirty. Learn about platform on which these languages are used. Participate in Open Source projects at GitHub etc (Just going through open source projects gets you clear on how things are working, what are aspects) Can code some simple but effective applications. As i see there is no get through of learning aspects of programming language without learning how to code?
