After LLM, what are job prospects?

For an Indian law student, how beneficial is it to do LLM in ipr from a foreign university? And what are the job prospects abroad, after the LLM?

  • Answer:

Unfortunately in india, save and except pharma firms or copyright and trademark specialist law firms, there are not enough openings for IPR lawyers. Hence, you have a better prospect outside india. However please note unlike in india, you will not be hired unless you have domain knowledge apart from your qualifications. Basically meaning if you want to practice patenting law say in the software industry, employers will look at you having the necessary technical background in understanding the way a code is written and that obviously means you have some expertise in writing the code in the first place. Same with designs law.

It increases your knowledge base and gives you strong foundations in IP law and theory but if you are looking for a tangible benefit, then the only thing I can think of is that depending upon the university, it might increase your chances of employment at the IP department of a domestic firm. Job prospects abroad after an LL.M are (especially post the financial crisis), bleak. This is not to say that things can't happen... one of my friends is in the IP department of Kirkland and Ellis after completing an LL.M... but she is the exception and not the norm. You should be prepared to return home after an LL.M. It is best to go in with a proper understanding of the realities. I hope this helps. Best.
