What should I bring to San Francisco?

How much would it cost to bring Google Fiber to San Francisco?

  • They launched in Kansas City. How much would it cost for Google or another company to bring the same thing to San Francisco? Why doesn't some company do this?

  • Answer:

Verizon claims to have spent $23BB (est) to pass 18 MM homes - works out to $1,000+ per home passed, which is the metric to describe a set of homes where the majority of the wires have been laid (at least to the street, I believe). Depending on the density of homes in Kansas City vs Fios' footprint vs San Francisco, this number may vary a bit, but aside fromĀ  accounting for home density, the cost to build out Google's fiber network should not have been significantly different since the majority of the costs of laying actual wires are the construction costs, not whether it's copper wire or fiber. If SF has 800,000 residents, then the cost of laying wires would be ~$800MM. On top of that, a set-top box would cost another $300 or so and the truck roll to provision the subscriber would be another $150. So you have an upfront fixed investment of $800MM to lay wires for the city; and then an upfront investment per actual subscriber of $450.
