How can I get my sleeping pattern back on the right track?

I am a student and I have a bad habit of sleeping late at night, which of course affects my wake up time. During holidays, at times, it gets worse. This affects my productivity during the day. How do I manage to stick to a strict routine? Like let's say - get up by 8am and sleep by 1am at the worst. Oh and I am bad at sticking to a schedule with involves exercise. So any suggestion involving running isn't probably for me at the moment unfortunately.

Necessity is the mother of invention. You are discovering being a student requires extra activity which is necessary but unusual. All medical students have your problem. Learn to set your own schedule and work out what's best for you. Then when you graduate, you can enter the real world. Marcel's comment about Melatonin is a good one. I have been taking it for over 15 years. And it is also a good anti-oxidant and dirt cheap over the counter. But it is not a sleeping pill. Personally just battled with this very same thing. Here's what worked for me: 1. Wake up 2 hours earlier than normal. 2. Exercise for 30 minutes sometime during the day. 3. No computer/phone/tablet screens 60 minutes before bed time. (This is your bedtime trigger) 4. Hop in the shower 30 minutes before bed. 5. Lie down and don't try to fall asleep... Just relax

melatonin is the answer. it can relatively safely "reset" your circadian rhythm. So if you want to sleep at 11pm every night, just take it around 10pm and get away from bright light sources and prepare for bed while reading a novel or something similarily soothing
