Why the quizzing scene in India is dominated by IIM / IIT alums?

Lets look at Mahaquizzer - 2013 results - (http://kqaquizzes.org/2013/06/09/mahaquizzer-2013-top-100-scores/) 1 Anustup Datta - IIM Calcutta / IIT Madras 2 P. Srikant - IIM Calcutta / DCE 3 Samanth Subramanian - UPenn / Columbia 4 Jayakanthan 5 Aniruddha Sen Gupta - IIT Madras 6 Rajiv Rai - IIM Ahmedabad / IIT Madras 7 Shouvik Guha - IIM Bangalore 8 Sumant Srivathsan - Ohio State 9 Thejaswi Udupa - IIM Bangalore / M.S.Ramaiah 10 Jayashree Jayakar Mohanka - IIM Calcutta / Madras Christian College Although quizzing is purely a hobby-based sport and there are some of the best quizzers in India who are not from the IIMs and IITs I wonder if there is any correlation between educational background and top quizzing achievements ? Or is this specific to Mahaquizzer only?

Answer:
Most of the best minds by default(parental/social pressure, interest in science) go to engineering institutions in our country. Those who don't may study management later and give CAT pursuing the same line of thinking.Indeed, a majority of IIT grads do go to IIM to boost their soft skills and land plush jobs. But that is not the point. The point is the best minds are curious minds and curious minds like to stay with other curious minds (which is how we learn more, like here at Quora) . Hence, you see the omnipresence of IIT and IIM grads in quizzing. Quizzes are a lot of about lateral thinking, connecting the dots, gluing shards of facts together and being observant. Students at IIT and IIM are more likely to be so than an average Political Science or sociology student. I have noticed (and it is true) that very few girls quiz. That does not make them any less intelligent than a guy from IIT or IIM who knows what is the Nike logo called (swoosh FYI). I am pursuing Bachelors in Commerce from St. Xavier's College and have a very, very, very tough time finding partners! On the other hand whenever I've tried my hand at open quizzing, I have found partners galore some science and tech students , a few not. So, it's not just the IIT/IIM thing , it is all about inculcating an environment for quizzing , curiosity and awareness . A lot of smart people around you tends to make you smarter too.
