What are advantages of being a chef?

Which of the following Configuration Management tool is easy to learn and implement? What are the advantages of choosing one over the other? Chef/Puppet

  • I am planning to automate the deployment of a Distributed database (MongoDB) in AWS spanning across subnets in a VPC, using ELBs and AutoScaling. I am totally a newbie here, Which one of the tools has a lot of demand in today's job market and how difficult is it to learn them?

    As a Puppet lover (and trainer and founder of a partner) I'm always leaning towards Puppet. In this case however, if you're (relatively) unskilled, purely on AWS and want to get going today have a look at OpsWorks from Amazon. It uses Chef underwater and allows you to get going quickly without too much hassle. Once you progress, you can hook up your own Chef cookbooks or even set up your own Chef server. Puppet is great for a lot of things, but it has a bit more of a learning curve.

For someone who is already a Ruby user Chef should be simpler. For a complete Newbie both are same. I am not sure about advantages.

Puppet was built specially for sysadmins and it doesnt require much scripting but u can write custom ruby codes to gain more control well on the other hand chef is good for those who love to write code for everything they want to automate, Both tools are excellent for automation purpose, i would recommend trying both of them. It would be a good learning as well as easier for you to make a choice.
