What are the best trade jobs for women?

Ideas on starting up a social enterprise / small business in Jordan to empower youth and women in relative poverty? (Capability building, income, etc.)

  • Wanting to make a difference to a poor local community by providing a means to make income (not many jobs available otherwise) and capability building for the future - target youth and women, theme: pride / dignity / capabilties I have a 5-10 year goal of starting up an organisation/company in Jordan, potentially e-commerce related (eg. international trade of goods), potentially local only. The overall theme of the organisation will be pride/dignity and capability building. The aims are: To give men who are 16-20 years old the opportunity to work for an organisation that will help them gain work experience, useful skills and an income to supplement their family's income. To give women who have been looking after large families of children but now have a bit more time the opportunity to gather with other women in an environment where they can supplement their income. Key issues here will be messaging - so that their work does not reflect poorly on their husbands (potential to cause issues where men feel it is their role to provide for their families) My husband is local from the area we would target - a poor Palestinian community, with large families currently making about $300 per month. He speaks Arabic and knows the culture (and most of the people). I do not yet speak Arabic well (part of the 5 year plan!) I have a background in management consulting and engineering and law and in a few years we will both have MBAs. I'd love to get in touch with people who have started similar social enterprises (I can imagine many similar organisations focusing on selling of crafts), and to get the best learning from now on in terms of reading, networking, etc.  Ideally we will have started our own for-profit business by then and will find a way to make it work as some sort of off-shoot to share resources and make it easier to run. I am in Melbourne, Australia. I would move to Jordan to set this up, probably 5-10 years from now, but want to set everything in place over the next 5 years to get there. I travel there once to twice per year. Do you have any ideas of where I should start: Websites Existing companies to talk to Networks Or any ideas related to the project? What works best for a community based business? Selling food? Selling things overseas (potentially much better money this way)? How to get women involved without hurting mens' pride? How to best help the young boys gain skills they can use to branch out on their own afterwards (limited base education)? What are some major tips you'd have in approaching this? How much money does it take to invest in something like this? Thanks so much!
