I want to construct my own audio processing vsts and don't know where to start. i don't even know what this is called. i thought i'd use imageline's synthmaker because i'm familiar with ruby, and it supports the language. can anyone point me to books in this area?

Answer:
Synthmaker (now http://www.dsprobotics.com/) is a nice modular environment, but you'll only be able to export for Windows VST format. I would suggest you to give http://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/synths-samplers/reaktor-5/ a try, which is really deep and you've lot of instruments you can take example from, it also has a great community. I've tried both and now I'm mostly using Reaktor.
