How fast is the fastest internet availability in the US?

Has the availability of free how-to videos and other resources on the internet negatively affected the service economy?

  • I know I personally have taken on countless household and automobile projects that I would have paid someone to do in the past, before the availability of free instructional videos, images, and diagrams on youtube and other websites.   I've also used these free resources for language and musical instrument instruction.  I know this phenomenon is widespread, so isn't it having a negative impact on the small and large businesses that provide those services?

    No because your (speaking collectively, not you personally but people who watch those videos) set of wants are not bounded.  They'll whet your appetite and you'll want more of those things and perhaps other related things.

Negative impact: maybe, but only for the short run and probably only for individuals, not on the overall economy. First, I think many people couldn't afford to pay for the repairs or improvements they are doing themselves, so they aren't putting others out of work. Second, for those like yourself who no longer hire out the work, if you spend the money on something else the money is still in circulation healing the economy.
