What are some good post apocalyptic Games?

Which are the most notable post-apocalyptic video games?

  • I'm looking for interesting games with post-apocalyptic settings.

  • Answer:

I can't believe Fallout was mentioned before Wasteland :). Wasteland, the mother of all post-apocalyptic games, can be somewhat viewed as the game that started genres. Many of the themes in Fallout are direct descendants of Wasteland (it's more a "spiritual successor" since Brian Fargo and Interplay were no longer involved and the game play was vastly different), from "New Reno" to the Vaults and the Brotherhood of Steel. Wasteland was voted one of the "Top 25 Games of All Time" and the #9 Game of All Time, by IGN and Game Magazine respectively. It's very immersive, has wide arrays of plots and sub-plots, some of which depend upon a certain choice in characters (you play a group, not just one guy), developed skills, and more. And best of all, it's available for free these days, very officially, since Fargo bought the IP back from EA in 2003 and made the original downloadware.

Fallout is one of the best PC videogame series of any genre.  The quality of gameplay, design and story in Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 make them classics.

The following is a list of the best post-apocalyptic video games that you can play. Retrieved from http://survivalistfamily.net/2015/08/13/top-10-post-apocalyptic-video-games/ 1) Left 4 Dead     The Left 4 Dead franchise is based on a series of co-operative first-person shooter, survival/horror video games developed by Valve Corporation. Set in the aftermath of a pandemic outbreak of a viral strain, the majority of the population is transformed into zombie-like feral creatures. The games follow the adventures of four survivors attempting to reach safe houses and military rescue while fending off the attacking hordes. 2) Dead Island     Dead Island is a 2011 action and role-playing survival/horror video game developed by Polish developer Techland and published by Germanstudio Deep Silver for Microsoft Windows, Linux, OS X, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. It is centered on the challenge of surviving a zombie-infested open world island with a major emphasis on melee combat. 3) Fallout   Fallout is a series of post-apocalyptic role-playing video games, created by Interplay Entertainment. Although the series is set during the 22nd and 23rd centuries, its atom-punk, retro-futuristic setting and artwork are influenced by the post-war culture of 1950's America, an era filled with hope for the promises of technology and undermined by a lurking fear of nuclear annihilation. A forerunner for Fallout is Wasteland, a 1988 video game, of which the Fallout series is regarded to be a spiritual successor. Despite the different game worlds, the background story, inhabitants, locations, and characters draw many parallels. 4) Metro 2033    Metro 2033 is a survival/horror, first-person shooter video game based on the novel "Metro 2033" by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky. Metro 2033 was developed by 4A Games in the Ukraine and was released on Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 in March 2010. In Metro 2033, the player controls Artyom as he moves through the ruins of post-nuclear, apocalyptic Russia. The player uses guns of both real and fictitious designs to kill mutants and hostile survivors. Most of the game takes place within the Metro system, although Artyom does venture above ground on rare occasions. 5) Wasteland 2    Wasteland 2 is a post-apocalyptic, role-playing video game developed by inXile Entertainment and published by Deep Silver for Microsoft Windows, OS X and Linux. It is the first official sequel to the 1988 video game Wasteland, although 1990's Fountain of Dreams, the cancelled Meantime, and the original 1997 Fallout were considered spiritual successors. The game was successfully crowd-funded through Kickstarter, part of a trend of high-profile developers launching projects on the site. After the postponement of the original release date on October 2013, it was released on September 19, 2014. 6) Mad Max 2015    Mad Max is an upcoming vehicular combat and third-person, action video game set in an open world environment and based on the Mad Max film series. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, featuring terrains like canyons, caves, and deserts. The game has tie-ins to the film "Mad Max: Fury Road." Players control Max Rockatansky as he progresses through the wasteland to search for his lost car, the Interceptor, and to build his ultimate car called the Magnum Opus. The game's narrative and story will also be more "mature" than other titles developed by Avalanche. 7) NEO Scavenger    How long can you survive the post-apocalyptic wastelands of NEO Scavenger? In the near future, supernatural activity and human warfare have fragmented mankind into pockets of civilization struggling to survive in wild and dangerous lands. You awaken alone in an abandoned facility with no food or water, a hospital gown, and a few items as clues to your identity. NEO Scavenger (playable as a stand-alone download or in the browser via Flash) is a game where you must survive in the wasteland long enough to figure out who you are. Each turn dictates where to go, how to scavenge, and how to deal with anything you encounter, while with each passing minute you are plagued by dehydration, starvation, exhaustion, and hypothermia. Choose your starting abilities carefully, because they and your wit are the only tools you have in the apocalypse! 8) The Walking Dead    The Walking Dead (also known as The Walking Dead: The Game and The Walking Dead: Season One) is an episodic, interactive drama/graphic adventure video game developed and published by Telltale Games. Based on Robert Kirkman's comic book series, the game consists of five episodes, released between April and November 2012. The game takes place in the same fictional world as the comic, with events occurring shortly after the onset of the zombie apocalypse in Georgia. However, most of the characters are original to the game, which centers on university professor and convicted murderer Lee Everett, who helps to rescue and subsequently care for a young girl named Clementine. Kirkman provided oversight for the game's story to ensure it corresponded to the tone of the comic, but allowed Telltale to handle the bulk of the developmental work and story specifics. Some characters from the original comic book series also make in-game appearances. 9) The Last of Us   The Last of Us is an action-adventure, survival/horror video game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was released for the PlayStation 3 on June 14, 2013. An updated version, The Last of Us Remastered, was released for the PlayStation 4 on July 29, 2014. Players control Joel, a man tasked with escorting the young Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States. The Last of Us is played from a third-person perspective and players use firearms, improvised weapons, and stealth to defend against hostile humans and zombie-like creatures infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus. "Listen mode" lets players locate enemies through a heightened sense of hearing and spatial awareness. Players can also upgrade weapons and items using items scavenged from the environment. In the game's online multiplayer, up to eight players can engage in co-operative and competitive game-play in recreations of single-player settings. 10) APOX    APOX is a real-time strategy game developed and published by BlueGiant Interactive for Microsoft Windows. It was released through Steam on January 20, 2011. APOX takes place in a near-future, post-apocalyptic, Mad Max-esque setting where players use real-time strategy and first-person shooting tactics. The game offers eight basic missions, as well as 100 different scrimmage maps.
