How might a Germany attack of France that didn't involve invading Belgium have looked in World War 1?
-
Let's say that Britain is more forceful in making it known that an attack on neutral Belgium will bring them in the war...so Germany redraws up their attack to make sure they don't go through Belgium. How would they have attacked instead and how might it have gone? Assume Britain doesn't declare war, since the non-invasion of Belgium got rid of their best excuse.

Answer:
Well they would not have had the sea-power to attack from the Atlantic, and planes were nowhere near a level to make any actual dent in the war so likely they would have had to go through the Ardennes as they did in WW2. The problem with this is to drag the artillery through the woods in 1914 would have been a logistical nightmare. They would also have no roads or train lines to move their follow up forces and materials. On the plus side you do not have Britain to fight so that's about 4 million less soldiers to deal with. Germany still has to fight France and Russia which have 2 of the largest armies in the world. Russia dropped out due to its own internal revolution which is not likely to change now that Britain is out of the picture. So its Germany/Austria vs France. Right up until the end the allies were on the verge of collapse and it was the intervention of America that finally broke the straw. Arguably the biggest reason for US entering the war was the unrestricted sub warfare. If the Germans are not fighting the British then there is little reason for unrestricted warfare and so the US likely does not join France. So given all that and assuming the Germans are hell bent on starting a war with France I believe that the war would have started out much more difficult for the Germans. Once they had a clear supply path through the Ardennes though, the situation likely would have rapidly deteriorated for the French and the Germans likely would have won the war. Without the British holding the Germans at the Somme and the eventual US participation the French would be constantly backpedaling from the German onslaught.
